“Hi my
name is Kevin and I have lived in Derry all my life. I have begun to
broaden my horizons now by studying away from home, and of course living
and working in Washington for eight weeks. I study Politics in Queens
University Belfast. Ive been lucky enough to get a placement on the Hill
with Representative Donald Payne. My hopes for the next eight weeks are to
experience as many new things as possible. I want to exchange cultural
views with people over here and expel the notion that back home is not
similar to war-torn Bosnia.”

Hello world heres all the craic of last week. Picking up on my last entry dinner last Monday evening was very good. The entire O’Neill clan was present. They were very interested in me and my future ambitions, talking about NI politics so I was in my element. We debated the popular issues of abortion and capitol punishment as you do, but not wanting to fall out with anyone I gracefully restrained my tounge. Very nice people and it was a very inspiring evening.

In typical young leaders style the night was young so it did’nt end there. On to Xandos I went yet to meet my fellow comrades. A guy beside us took an epileptic fit and since the guy in Xandos was trying to kill the victim by restraining him on his back thus makimg him swallow his tounge Mackell and myself promptly went to the patients aid only to be told by the so called resuer to piss off he knew what he was doing, yea right! The excitement didnt end there. We witnessed the slick US emergency services at their greatest. Not only did a paramedic Ambulance attend but a fire engine to cop cars and for all I know a helicopter overhead. As John correctly pointed out if it happened in belfast you’d probably be given a cup of tea or whiskey if you’re licky and sent home.

After that excitement we proceeded to Buffallo Billiards were Emer and Annie showed off their pool skills, well Annie did, we’ll say no more about Emer. Still at around 12:30 am Emer decided the night was still yet in its infancy and we went to a club called XVIII. It was a cool place, very different, the women were quite sensational and it was a nice change.

I dont no what happened in Tuesday, its all a blank and thats quite disturbing, hope someone can enlighten me. Up early in Wednesday morning to go to a working breeakfast, very professional eh. Then it was a mad dive to get to the hill to help out in Capitol hill day for the kids. It was a good day but exhausting, God luck to you Emma you have a tough job. That night I got home and passed out. The plan was to take a nap and get up to write a speech for the seminar voices of peace voices of the future on Thursday. The plan didnt work out, I slept right through and awoke at 4am to write my speech. So as you can imagineI was pretty nervous, a group of us spoke infront of Rep. Ed Crowley and my Congressman Donald Payne trying to enhance the programs chances of securing a quater of a million dollors Appropriations Funds. It was a big deal as you can imagine, not only was I speaking at it but I was chairing the proceedings also. Anyway it went brilliant and Mr Payne stood up and said alot of nice things about me so I hope you have it all on tape Diane, only kidding. Went to Delaware on Friday with Brian, was brilliant but I’m too tired now to fill you all in, I’ll let Brian do the honours for the meantime.
Anyways take it easy,
till next time hi!

Hey everyone, hope all is well. I almost couldn’t be bothered writing in this today as so much has happened in the last week. Have you all got a few hours. No only kidding, I’ll do me best to keep it short and sweet.

Last Wednesday we had the Young Leaders Seminar. An ex Senator gave us the presentation via the use of cinematography. It was really interesting however much too feminist orientated. All you feminists are as bad a male phauvinists. I bet I spelled that wrong and some die hard womens rights activist – the name Emer immediately springs to mind- will kindly correct me. Regarding the leadership seminar I wonder what sort of leaders people saw themselves as when we seen all the videos. I thought I was the last guy, the President who came clean having such a profound sense of civic duty.

Well Wednesday was nicely rounded off when me and a few of the lads accepted a kind invitation to go out to Catholic University and do a little worship. No to go to a party close to campus where I believe beer and women were promised in plentiful supply. Well the women must have hid when they seen us lads coming cause there was none to be seen, accept the couple of girls who lived in the flat we went to and kindly told us to piss off so they could go to sleep. Thank god there was no free beer cause the state Paddy was in after two cans another and he would have been in ER. Even Adam accepted our hosts kind hospitality of a little wash when he stuck his head into the fish tank and probably gave all the fish a heart attack.

We retired from our party kind of early only to bump into a few – aggressive shall we say- Americans. But dont worry John Braveheart Mackell proudly fought our corner for us and later to maintain his new found cause delivered his infamous “FREEDOM” speech in a restaurant on Saturday night.

Thursday we were in Nanny’s. Was a craacker wee night after a long weeks work, did you notice our weekend here is thursday til monday. Friday was J. O. Wilson day and I think John has found his career. It was really interesting but strange. I’ve talked infront of very important people before and to begin with I think I was more afraid of speaking in front of those kids than all the other people I’ve spoken to. But we all settled into it real quickly and both parties learned and gained alot. I got more stick of coming from Derry hi! so the next joke will not be accompanied with my usual passive responses; only kidding, not! On Friday night I went to Georgetown, played pool and just chilled with the still. Believe me it was well needed, no actually a months hibernation is what was really needed. Went back to Brian and Emmas and experienced Brians gourmet skills. Saturday was DC United day and as you can imagine I was about to collapse from exhaustion, but being the tough man I am I strove on through thick and thin. Newcastle gave a shameful performance at the match and they are lucky I got my ticket free or my feelings would have been a little more vocal, DC kicked there asses. I retired early on Saturday night to recharge the batteries, you have to do it some time, and slept for twelve hours, alleluiah. Sunday was Ann’s BBQ and it was really good. We played American football which was great craic, pity the Redskins had no scouts there, Im sure we’d have been signed up immediately. Monday was a long day in the office coupled with an equally long meeting that night. Didnt finish up til about 11:45 and then hit Xandos for a well earned cold one. Today was really cool in work. I went to a subcommittee on Africa which was about Sierra Leone. I still cant believe the openess of the whole system here. I heard many things Im sure I shouldnt really know which means I probably cant write them here but lets just say my eyes were opened and my ears pricked up. It’s out to dinner tonight with my mentor and her brother. Then a working breakfast in the morning. I’ve barely time to breathe, every so often I need to pause and take a gasp. I love this city and I love this program, til next time this is kev signin off.

Hi everyone, its that time again. It actually feels quite strange now keeping the world updated on what is going on with my life. Its like Mork and Mindy, Robin Williams keeping the guy up above informed of every experience he has on earth. Well Washington is just like an entirely new planet to me being an exciting and challenging new learning curve.
Yesterday Ashling kindly arranged for three of us to go to a luncheon organized by the Boston Institute. The theme was young political leaders of Ireland and Britain. The Scottish Shadow Minister (mem of SNP) was in attendance. I had the opportunity to ask him a few questions from the floor and had a very interesting conversation with him. Then he gave us a lift in a cab back to the capitol.
I met my mentor this week who is Rosemary O’Neill, daughter of Tip O’Neill, former speaker of the House of Representatives. She is a very interesting lady and I’d like to add that the mentoring scheme is wonderful. I was supposed to attend the launch of the Aer Lingus shuttle flight from Dublin to Baltimore but silly me mixed up the arrangements and missed it. I was not happy with myself.
Work is still fine, I’m keeping myself busy at the mo, no great demands are being placed on me. I’m just being given my independence at the minute breezing in and out as I please. I’m sure this is going to change shortly though.
A strange thing happened yesterday. I was sitting in the infamous Xandos on my jack jones at around 15:30 p.m. This stunningly beautiful girl, looked about 23 yrs old, was sitting out side. Obviously I noticed her. Next thing she gets up and comes into Xandos towards me. I’m thinking whats the craic here? Then she comes up to me, and says excuse me. I’m thinking shes going to ask directions or something. She asks me is your name Bruce. Me not being the quickest of people immediately responds no. She apologized and left. Then the lightnig bolt struck, why the hell could you not have been Bruce. Anyway she left Xandos empty handed and Bruce must be one stupid or very sorry man. I’m sure my accent would have revealed my true identity however as I am often reminded. Only in America eh! Conference committee seems to be making a little progress at last. I’ve just been asked to take the odd Wednesday off as there is so many interns in my office. Most interns are getting two days off but poor me just gets half the day. Anyway I think thats all folks, tune in same time same place next week.

Hi all, me again. Work is going as well as can be expected. I met Gerry Adams yesterday and it was an experience to say the least. We posed for photographs and since the US Representatives let him of the hook by asking him easy questions in the International Relations Committee I decided to quiz him with a few of my own in the corridor. I was surprised and impressed with how receptive he was towards the six or so of us in the group who met him. He was extremely down to earth and tried to crack a few poor jokes but nonetheless its good he tried, not many politicians from the North would or could!
The troubles back home are really pissing me off. Its when you are departed from the situation and in another country looking at things from a new perspective that you realise how stupid and rediculous some people are back home. But I’m not going to blab on about that or I’d be as bad as them.
Went away all weekend last week to the Chesepeke Bay. It was really nice and tranquil, we were in this great we town and the pace of life there was about five times slower than back home and about twenty times slower than in the city. I didnt think I would see that side of America but I’m glad I did. We went fishing and every time I cast the rod I caught a fish almost. Dont worry all animal rights activists we threw most of them back although we did keep one or two for breackfast next morning.
Thats about all for now. My Congressman just returned from Portadown yesterday. He had a few interesting stories to tell as you may expect but there probably better kept for a different place. Good luck all, see yous soon.

Hi everyone, I’ve just managed to drag myself away from my desk for two minutes to give you all an update. No, only kidding Congress is in recess this week so things are pretty slow. We are allowed to wear are civies so thats cool. Spent the 4th in DC, supposedly the best place in the states to be. If DC was the best I’d hate to be in the worst. We all figured that it would be the American equivalent of St Paddy’s day back home but definitely not. Other than the fireworks- which were very impressive- there was nothing exciting at all.
Work is fine, trying to stay busy this week but my boss is gone so its a bit tricky. We’re all goin to New York soon so im really looking forward to that but im quite certain its goin to cost a fortune.
I hear things are pretty rough back home but for once at least we dont have to put up with it. An American was commenting on the trouble at lunch time and I was shocked at how niave and simplistic his conception of the entire thing was. Anyway 1hr to go and counting til im done. See yas.

Hi everyone, hope alls well. I thought I had better start earning my keep out here for young leaders 2000 and submit a journal entry to tell you all how i’m doin. I recently made my television debut on C-span extra and CNN. The congressman I’m working for told me to sit behind him during an OPEC hearing on the energy committee so I could get on intrnational TV, lucky me eh!
Im getting on great in my office, everyone could not be nicer. Im working for the international affairs committee in my office. Its really exciting because there is so much happening in the world at any one time its hard to keep up. I’m also proving to be quite useful as I can obviously offer my expertise with regards to the North of Ireland. On that note after me making the trek to Washington DC my Congressman is travelling back home next week to monitor the Drumcree parade. Quite ironic isnt it but it’s been really good as my office have relied on me for info. My boss and I wrote the Congressmans media address for when he arrives in NI, thats quite cool cause it gives you a good sense of meaning to what your doing out here. I hav’nt done any photocopying or answering phones yet so thats a great sign. I was goin to keep writing but I’ve got to help write a letter to a president of some country in Africa I’ve never heard of and I couldn’t even begin to pronounce his name. Later!
