“Hi there, my name is
Emer Currie. I’m excited and honoured to be heading out to Washington D.C.
for the summer, that’s if they let me leave Ireland with all my luggage.
For the next eight weeks I’ll be an intern at Capitol Hill, learning about
the in’s and out’s of a political press office. What lies ahead is an
adventure, and an unprecedented experience. I like to think that I work
hard and play hard, so I should be in my element. Being part of such an
interesting and new city is a prospect that brings to mind so many
feelings. I love to immerse myself in the new and different cultures and
experiences that only traveling can offer. This time last year I was on a
gap year working for Cable & Wireless in Grand Cayman. I have one year
left as a Modern History and Politics student at Queen’s University in
Belfast. I’m hoping that my summer in Washington will clear some of the
haze surrounding my career path; but it will probably arouse even more
life ambitions. Check out my web page for further developments!”

Hi everyone…I’m taking a few minutes of my very busy schedule to assure you that I’m still alive! I’m looking forward to lunch as my Congressman is treating his hardworking interns to food at the Members Club. Apparently the crab cakes are nice, I’ll keep you informed! I’m telling you, we really get the inside info.

Unfortunately I missed the Listening Day last week, so I can’t tell you how if felt to have everyone comment on my positive leadership attributes. Probably just as well! It seems to have been quite a groundbreaker for everyone and I can see how the group is coming together.

I too was at the Irish Times last night, in fact I was the last of us to leave….without paying my tab I’ll add. A very innocent mistake! I met the Young Politicians who seem like a nice crowd. One of them was able to tell me exactly where my house was and what it looked like (he lives less than half a mile away)!

This weekend I’m going hiking with my mentor…I better bring an injection of alcohol as opposed to Annies adrenalin one, in case my body decides to reject fresh air and exercise!

Mmmm, hotdogs. There’s a domestic going on in the office over the batch of hotdogs that have just arrived. I better go before I start to drool over the keyboard.

Well hello people! Sorry for the delay in updating you on my activities in DC, but from glancing through the other journals, it looks like there’s no shortage of news and gossip to keep you entertained. We interns will do our very best to ensure our stay in DC will not be easily forgotten, for all the right reasons of course! Some of us are better at it than others though-right oh nameless ones?

Well I’m sitting here in work, my first day since Friday. I still find it surprising that the office staff are so young, and I’m not just talking about the interns! So far, I haven’t had the opportunity to brief the Congressman on my fool-proof plans for world peace, but hey, I’ve only been here a week! I’ve only had the pleasure of speaking to one caller who thought they knew the solution to N.Irelands little problem…a little patience goes a long way!

July 4th was great, we gathered at the Washington Memorial to watch the fireworks. I suppose it shouldn’t really surprise me that the crowd are so well-behaved, not a rowdy spectator in sight. Hopefully we got some good photographs that will either be posted in our photo album or featured in the video doc that is currently in the making. I’m also using some of my decreasing brain power to come up with some hot ideas for the conference in Sept….any ideas?

These first 2 weeks have been amazing, a real eye-opener in so many ways. My ideas on leadership are constantly being changed and questioned. In terms of the group itself, I found the Myers-Briggs personality test both amusing and informative. The visit to Mount Lebanon Baptist Church was great craic, despite those of us who were feeling quite poorly from the night befores exploits.

Anyways, promise it won’t be so long next time…Emer
