Hi everybody. I hope you are all having a really great time, like myself. I’m in
Senator Durbins office and there are six other interns here but we all have something to
work on usually, from the mundane to the extremely interesting. I get to give tours round
the Capitol building, which I have not quite perfected yet, ie. I get lost all the time. I
also have sat in on hearings. Of course there is always opening the mail and
“xeroxing” which is always something to do, but I keep running away from ringing
phones – people have trouble understanding my accent. The hours are fine and its good to
get into a routine again – the days seem so much longer when you don’t get up at twelve
everyday! Everyone is so friendly here, don’t you all think? Even people on the Metro, or
on the street, which is fantastic considering my sense of direction… What do the girlies
think of American men? They are really well mannered, which makes a change from home
(except for all the lovely men out with us from N. Ireland.)

How was everyones weekend? Was it heaven or hell? Mine was neither as I missed you all
on Saturday. Sara and I went to the football, but we couldn’t find anyone, so we went
home. I’m sure it was good anyway. We went to a party on Saturday night which was, as all
Americans say, “fun”. Sunday was great, and it made a change from the serious
worship at home.Nice performances from everyone too. Its probably just as well that I
didn’t get started on Percy Frenchs’ “Mountains of Mourne”, as I may have
cleared the place. We finished the day by shopping, which is a bad idea whenever you have
just been given $150. Perfume and Cosmetics are so much cheaper here, which is fantastic –
I’ll have no excuse to smell now.. Would someone else write something in their journal?
I’m sick of only being able to read my own entries – they are boring enough to read once!

It’s hot today, I mean hotter than it usually is. Has anyone noticed that American is a
real and definite language over here? Americans don’t speak English, well if they do, they
certainly don’t spell English. I was typing a memo there a while ago and nearly every
other word came up in the spellchecker as an error. Americans leave “U”‘ s out
all over the place. I.e- “color” and “favor”. Also “ER”
would be “re” at home – well who cares as long as George Clooney is still in it.
Sorry that was pretty lame. More jokes later. ……..
