“Hi
there! Welcome to my world. I am Diane Compton, 20 years of age from East
Belfast. At present I am at Leeds University studying Broadcasting and
here in Washington, I am working at my placement which is Richfield
Productions. Ive already got lost on my way there but I think it will be
a tremendous experience. Coping with the heat will probably be the biggest
dilemma along with the metro system-nightmare! Ive been involved with
cross-community groups throughout my teens such as the Spirit of
Enniskillen, set up by Gordon Wilson after the Enniskillen bomb and
Glencree. I work on Leeds Student Radio making music and fashion packages
and I have also made some short films for my course. Hopefully be
documenting the group in some way this summer so watch out!”

p.s. Barry you should never be ashamed of Castlereagh , your denial that you come from it’s vicinity was a touch too animated.

So much to say, such a little space…well i don’t know where to start.Right now I’m covered in mosquito bites as myself and Annie went to watch ‘Singing in the rain” on the mall last night. We have had a week of learning more about the real DC mixed with revelry. (only in moderation though readers).
After hearing from the community leaders, from Anacostia and other neighbourhoods which was fantastic, a couple of us saw fit to honour the dying hours of the twelth of July with a reinactment of a march, complete with residents, RUC and lodge members.Unfortunately someone also saw fit to take photograghs so I cannot deny my involvement.
Had a bit of excitement in our house with Annie’s allergic reaction (honestly that’s a sin, but even she laughs about it)!On Saturday it hit us for the first time that we only have 4 weeks left to do all the stuff in DC that we wanted to when we left. For some people that’s going to the Smithsonian museums, for others it’s getting a snog.

Saturday night was very funny at Jenny’s house.I remember making Paul sing Kenny Rodgers with me, as you do, me and Brenda shared a couch to sleep on and I’ve still got Brians rugby shirt.(I was cold, ok)
Work has been cool too, Rich the boss is back and I went to see a Japenese translation of a video they’d made the other day.I have to say my mentor seems completely dead on too.
We’ll I’m off to find my pebble.
Take care,
Diane xox

Ahoy !
I’ve stopped head-sway now after Saturday’s cruise around Chesapeake bay.
A good time was had by all , in fact we’ve been rather busy with activities this weekend.
The play on Friday night, even though the storyline may have been a little disturbing, was great and the actors were so glad to see us filling the seats that they made us a cake.
And Sean I thought my question showed a degree of insight and thoughtfulness unlike your comments on global warming.
Saturday night made us all appreciate the laws back home reguarding pubs.We failed miserably to find a place downtown that would accommodate everyone, but some people managed to make the best of a bad situation and wave their glowsticks til 3am.
Sunday was the pool party organised by Niamh’s mum who is sooo hospitable.
Bit of treading water…eat some crisps…pose for a bit…back in water…no better way to spend a Sunday.
And to round it off we watched a very edited version of Boogie nights last night…I thought this was the land of the free but even at 1am the swearing was all cut.
Anyway it’s probably a good thing that I didn’t get corrupted.
back to work except for those at the golf tournament.
I think this was a quiet enough weekend at home.Fingers crossed.

Two hours……that is how long it took to get home last night. Some people no doubt have that every day and now I really know how you feel.
(i.e. Helen and Kathryn)
Two hours though…… by a mixture of metro, bus and then when we gave up, taxi.
Emer was still seeing the fireworks hours afterwards and Annie fell over a trolley and wrecked her knee so I was grateful at getting home in one piece.
Although the group was all kind of lost, it was a good night although Mark is definitely right about the lack of party atmos.
Everyone at the Washington monument couldn’t wait to leave when the last firework had well…………. fireworked I suppose.
They were running to the metro queue with their picnic baskets when really they should have just chilled as we did on some steel railings while being persistently pestered by Leo to go to a pub. (Bet you’re all jealous, eh ?)
Anyway back to work you slackers who are reading this.
Ciao Diane

Yes it’s really me, I know I’ve been a bit slack at getting around to writing, (for example Emer and I got up at 2pm yesterday) but it could be the tail end of jet lag (likely) or just the fact that I’ve been a bit work-shy for the past year and 1 week has been a shock to the system !
And they put me to work in an area with amazing – and amazingly expensive clothes shops- what are they trying to do to me ?
I’ve been given a video camera from my placement to be let loose filming the group, so I’m a bit nervous about being mugged in the next few weeks…but I’ll not scare Rich or Kathie anymore.
Honestly…the expensive equipment is in good hands !

Emer and I went to a Peace Corps party at the weekend, which we thought would be all full of free love etc, but we must have got the wrong address as it seemed to be happening at Colin and Leo’s…..

Strange, eh ?
I’m sure I’ll have plenty to say about the fourth of July, so until then.
Goodbye x
