I’m sure that all will agree that last night was an eye-opener into the real D.C. Each person’s story shed new light on the numerous aspects of life in Washington the 2 million tourists to the city each year may never see. It would have been easy for us to leave after 8 weeks with glossy perceptions of the nation’s Capital…but not now. I’m looking forward to visiting some of the projects that exist in the D.C. area and maybe learning how to deal with the problems that these areas present and also prevention measures for back home.

Hi everyone, I hope that D.C. is treating you well. Everything is awesome on ‘the Hill’…I know I can only use phrases like this here as I won’t last long at home.
Today Gerry Adams paid the International Relations committee a visit and a good few young leaders got the opportunity to watch them eat their danishs and grapes! It was most informative for Americans…many of us heard nothing new. I think Mr. Adams was glad to see home grown interns and was asking how on earth we all got here. So Look out for our photograph with him on the front of the Washington Post (in our dreams!)

Hi everyone. Well i’ve just got back from a snooze on the House floor!!! A few of us availed of the opportunity to hear a little more about the history of Congress by attending an intern lecture on the floor of the house. Those beautiful leather seats were just so comfortable that I easily managed a hour long nap!!!
I can’t believe that this week on Capitol hill is nearly at an end once again. I think I could get used to these three day working weeks. On Independence Day I was lucky enough (along with Debbie, Emma and Brian) to see the President play golf on the front lawn at the White House.iI have to say golf didn’t seem to be his strong point…but he took the time to talk to us and pose for a photo, which I thought was pretty nice.

Well its the end of week one on Capitol Hill. I can hardly believe it…the time has just flown in. In the past few days I have been lucky enough to meet some amazing people, like George Mitchell, Ben Gilman and Peter King. Today a man from Newry
came into our office to talk about his role in a mediation organisation in Northern Ireland. We found out that he knows my mum. It really is such a small world.
Well the 4th of July weekend is soon to begin. I’m looking forward to lots of parties and 2 days off work!!!

I still think I’m dreaming! Everything has gone great so far as regards the
internship. Yesterday I attended my first hearing of the International relations
commmittee…so if you need to know anything about OPEC and oil prices you know
who to ask. Today I had to conduct research on the case of the killing of 8 IRA
men and one civilian in Loughgall, Co. Armagh, in May, 1987. The International
Relations committee is working on the families case at the moment. There is also
going to be a large hearing as regards policing in Northern Ireland in July…so
I’m going to be involved with this too. I’m going to return home with more
knowledge than ever not only about USA but home as well.
Why is it raining so much? I’ve never seen anything like it. I suppose now I
can have a swimming pool in my house too.
