Aoife Gormally’s First Impressions of America

Aoife Gormally ’98
Belfast

Well, I’m in America. Its my
first time here and I love it. I have a wonderful family who treat me
like their own. The City is beautiful but I’m sure you’ve all
realized, its hot and they all keep telling me “Its going to get
hotter!!! Are you all prepared?” My family are trying to teach me
baseball. I’m finding it hard to understand. So if you know the in’s
and out’s of baseball, tell me about it. After all, it took me ages to
work out the offside rule in football.(soccer) Has anybody got a
simple explanation for that.

Hi ya,

I know that i took my time to write my first journal entry but i swear it wasn’t my
fault! Well i have read some interesting things on the various websites (but i have heard
more interesting things from the interns themselves-and their exploits ) and i am sorry to
say that mine wont be quite as interesting. So far i have been made to feel really welcome
by the various people that i am working with. The office staff are so friendly and
flexiable, if you want a two hour lunch you just take it. Recently there was a fire in our
office and we were all evacuated into temperatures of 105oF but our office gather in the
bar so i think that they really do have traditional irish blood! I am going to leave this
short and sweet as i am doing work and there is so much to do.

I’m back with not much more to say than the last time! Last week-end i think that I
must of had the most relaxing two days of my life. I went to Deleware to the Beach with
Kathie, Rich and Andrea. The weather was great and the pool was even better, I’ll not say
too much about the two dogs that accompanied us as Kathie may get offended(all I’ll say is
one likes swimming and the other likes to try!!!!) I dont know about the rest of you but i
am really looking forward to New York. Oh yeah I nearly forgot to tell you beware when
making phone calls, make sure you dont hit the wrong buttons. I somehow managed to press
the button that is an automatic line to 911. They tried to phone back but of course i was
on the phone chatting away, so 10 minutes later the door bell goes and there is a police
officer standing at the door. I glance past him and there is not only one police car but
another one and a fire engine. (I dont know what the neighbours will think but I am sure
that they will tell my host family that the police called to the house,as i saw them
staring out the window!!!) Luckily I managed to talk my way out of it and avoided a fine
with my Northern Irish charm. The moral of the story is watch when you are dialling a
phone number as you dont know who will turn up at your door!!!! Well that is enough for
today as i am off to the Irish embassey.
